Hwan Sung Medical Charity Services has sponsored 15 children to undergo heart operations at the Uganda Heart Institute in Mulago Hospital.

The children, who are aged between four months and two years, are suffering from patent ductus arteriosus, a disorder in the heart which leads to irregular transmission of blood between two arteries close to the heart.

The Hwan Sung Group of Companies chairman, Sung-Hwan Kim, and the vice-chairman, Jeung-Bong Ahn, on Thursday met the beneficiary babies and their parents at the company head office in Ntinda Industrial Area to brief them about the operations that kick off today.

The head of the heart institute, Dr. Tom Mwambu, and a consultant cardiovascular surgeon, Dr. Michael Oketcho, attended the briefing.

Dr. Mwambu said one child, Emmanuel Kiyegga, 3, who had just been nominated to undergo the same operation died recently because the infection had already damaged his heart and lungs.

He cautioned parents to take their children for medical checkup when they show symptoms of heart infections.

Each child will spend seven days in the hospital at a cost of sh1.8m paid by Hwan Sung Medical Charity Services.
