FEDERATION of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU) has lifted former national champion Ponsiano Lwakataka’s ban just in time for the Mbarara Rally this weekend.

Lwakataka’s three-month suspension, which was due to end on March 13, was lifted by the FMU executive last week. He was suspended for bringing the sport into disrepute when he featured children in promotional adverts of his event last season.

FMU’s decision to lift the ban puts Lwakataka on equal footing with other contenders for the 2010 National Rally Championship that begins this weekend in Mbarara.

“We cautioned him seriously. He served his three-month sentence which he had almost exhausted. He should now be cautious, we are tough on disciplinary issues,” FMU vice president (Rallying) Kisitu Mayanja stated.

Lwakataka had earlier applied to the competitions committee to be pardoned but his request was rejected. He then appealed to the FMU executive which lifted the ban with a caution.

The 2008 national champion immediately registered for the Mbarara event that has all indications of an exciting start to the national championship.

Meanwhile, Robert Kakogoso will this time only worry about the terrain but not the car.

Kakogoso has bought a new Subaru N10, and has vowed to challenge for the championship.

“Let my fans come and cheer me in the new car. I am ready to give the Kampala drivers a run for their money come Saturday and Sunday,” Speaking Kakogoso said,

The western rally darling did not take part in last year’s edition because his old Toyota Celica crashed on test on the rally eve.

The event is sponsored by Lake View Hotel and Tower Auto Parts.
