Would you pay for the wrong Destination?

Lugazi-Kawolo, Lugazi,” shouted the taxi conductor as passengers struggled to get in. “Mugaga jangu tugenda bugenzi,” (Rich man come, we will soon be on our way), the conductor beckoned me. Since I was in a hurry, I boarded.

I was sure we were on our way to Lugazi. However, I soon realised some passengers were on the wrong taxi. One boarded, intending to stop at Banda, a Kampala suburb. Logically, the gentleman thought he would pay the Banda fare. Unfortunately, when the taxi reached Banda, the conductor asked him to foot the Lugazi fare.

This sparked off an argument between the conductor and the gentleman. Other concerned passengers could not stomach the nasty comments, and told the gentleman to pay because the conductor was specific in calling where the taxi was going.

The enraged man hurled insults at the conductor, who kept his cool. Since it was evening, many passengers told the gentleman that he should not have taken the issue out of proportion. They advised him to use polite language.

Fortunately, a good Samaritan helped the irate passenger to pay the Kawolo fare of sh3,000 instead of sh1,000 to Banda.

He lost the battle to the conductor, thanks to the conductor’s calm nature that attracted passengers to his take his side.

This is the first time I have witnessed this in a taxi.
