FOUR Kampala City Council officials arrested in connection with expired drugs have been released on police bond.

The suspects, all staff in the health department, were released on Tuesday, a day after they were questioned and detained over tuberculosis and malaria tablets dumped in Kampala’s Industrial Area.

The suspects are Dr. Mesach Mubiru, Dr. Deus Lukooye in charge of tuberculosis control, Dr. Samuel Kisakye, a senior dispenser in charge of stores and Dr. Apollo Sowuto, a clinical officer.

Also released was Julius Bwambale from whose clinic some expired drugs reportedly picked from the batch in Industrial Area were recovered.

The crime chief, Jonathan Kalungi yesterday said he asked the suspects to provide letters of appointment among other documents when they return to the station next week.

In their statements, the suspects reportedly denied any wrongdoing, claiming that the drugs were collected from various city hospitals and were about to be disposed of.

The KCC staff reportedly attempted to burn some of the drugs on learning that the spotlight had been turned on them, unit personnel said on Monday.
