MARVIN Odong’s loss of a father earlier in the day could not stop the flanker from leading his King’s College Budo side to the Coca Cola Schools Rugby trophy.

Odong was instrumental in Budo’s 8-6 victory over rivals Namilyango College in the final played at Kyadondo on Sunday, despite the death of his father Dr. Julius Odongo.

Odong learnt of the death the same morning but braved to be part of the Budo team and accomplish the unfinished work, which he succeeded.

With tears streaming down his cheeks, Odong screamed at the end: “We are the champions, we are the champions.”

Budo came from 6-0 down to emerge the Coca Cola Super 8 Schools Rugby champions in a tight final that saw parents emotions also go high.

William Kutureebe and Daudi Semwami penalties gave Namilyango the lead. But they failed to contain pressure from a re-organised and charged Budo and broke down in the 58th minute.

Nobert Muganzi scored a penalty before Philip Lasu added a try to seal the score 8-6 and end a five year title drought.

Budo will lead Namilyango and St. Mary’s College Kisubi to the East African schools rugby championships due in July in Nakuru, Kenya.

“We dedicate the victory to Marvin who today lost his father and braved to play this final with us,” Budo rugby chairperson Adinan Mutebi said.
