The Pandanus tectorius, when fully grown, has a broad canopy that towers above the roof tops of houses and bares dangling roots which support it on the ground.

It has a stout trunk with wide branching ringed leaf scars. There is a more decorative variety, P. Sanderi, with green and yellow stripes.

You have to be careful where you place it as it needs a lot of space to grow into its natural giant size. Lower leaves may be constantly removed to create space beneath.

The Pandanus is very easy to grow as long as you do not overwater it while its not yet established. It prefers hot dry conditions.

It is propagated by stem cuttings which root readily when placed directly in well drained soils.
