WHEN it comes to gift-giving, there is one thing that goes by a certain rule — mums prefer homemade gifts crafted with love more than anything else in this world.

Remember the tears in her eyes when you gave her that playfully painted sheet of paper with crayon drawings of her, for her birthday? Not much has changed now except the fact that you can now craft something more beautiful and useful.

Instead of going through the motions, buying stuff like a gomesi, flowers, perfume and shoes — most likely coupled with a factory-made card with words already written, or a text message someone got off the web, do something new by doing it yourself for a change.

Tips on the gifts
Stay home mamas have grown fond of the brush and broom. Children rarely take up any domestic chores since she has all the time to do all that. Make this her ultimate day-off by bringing her breakfast in bed and prompt her to keep sleeping since you will do all the chores for the day.

Potted plants make great Mother’s Day gift.
Choose flowering plants or small trees for gifts. Wrap the plants in coloured wrapping paper and tie with a ribbon.
You can also place pots of several plants in a large flower pot garden. Put together a gardening gift basket for her. This is a winner especially if gardening is her passion.

Are you artistically gifted?
Craft something like a scarf, necklace, or a personalised pillow case — anything around that will make her day out of the ordinary.

At six years, Winnie Akello crafted a card for her Mum on Mother’s Day which brought a tear to her eyes and she keeps it to date.

Surprise her by developing that beautiful youthful photo she carefully tucked away, into a larger copy, framed in a beautiful frame.

It is perfectly alright to take your mum dancing to her favourite oldies music.
On her birthday, Julia’s children, who play instruments, serenaded her playing her all time favourite songs, a moment she says will never elude her memory.

While not everyone can sing or play an instrument, if you can afford, reserve her favourite Ugandan artiste for an exclusive concert. It may cost you but she is worth all that and more

It is a broken record taking your mum out to dinner.
Why not prepare a special African meal right in her kitchen. Most moms will not get so excited by your bacon and pizza but will surely enjoy a meal of well steamed bananas coupled with smoked meat in groundnut paste.

Instead of ordering for some bakery uptown, bake a cake and write words like ‘I love you mummy.’ That is far better than a silver watch.

With busy work and family schedule, older children barely spend time with their aging mothers. She may have all the material things your rich wallet can offer but paying her an early visit this Saturday and spending the day with her could make the best gift she has received.

A good old massage is not a bad idea after all you are celebrating and nurturing the mothering spirit.
A home massage can give her an opportunity for relaxation with the scents, sounds, and a heavenly touch.
