THERE was excitement when a newly-wed couple turned up at the office of the bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Mityana to receive their prize for keeping their virginity till marriage.

Last year, Bishop Samuel Stephen Kaziimba of Mityana diocese launched a campaign to reward virgins to promote abstinence among the youth.

“This is Christopher and Christine Katumba of Makonzi parish, who married when virgins. My committee of senior respected women has proved that Christine was a virgin,” Kaziimba said amid cheers from priests and other diocesan leaders, who had gathered at the bishop’s office.

The couple received sh100,000 and Bibles.

At least 50 couples have been wed at the diocese since December, but only one has turned up for the prize.

Kazimba said there was need to sensitise the youth about issues concerning sexuality to safeguard them from HIV/AIDS.

“We have to find a way of incorporating cultural issues with religious values such that we bring up our children well,” he said.

When asked how she managed to abstain from sex until marriage, Christine said she heeded the media messages and counselling from her auntie.
