UNITED Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has appealed to African governments to spend at least 15 percent of their budgets on the fight against HIV/AIDS.

He praised Uganda and President Yoweri Museveni for taking a lead in the fight against the scourge. Ban Ki-Moon said the epidemic remained a serious global problem.

He called for universal access to the HIV/AIDS drugs and urged leaders and the international community to ensure that global health is promoted worldwide.

Ban Ki-moon, accompanied by his wife Yoo Soon Taek, made the remarks yesterday while visiting the Uganda Joint Clinical Research Centre (UJCRC) in Mengo, Kampala.

Health state minister James Kakooza and UJCRC boss Peter Mugyenyi led Ban Ki-moon on a tour of the facility.
The UN boss urged Ugandans and the world to fight discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS.

“The United Nations believes in universal access to drug and ensuring health worldwide. Our aim is to get as much support as we can from the international community to fight the HIV/AIDS scourge,” Ki-moon said.

He, however, expressed concern over the increasing cases of tuberculosis and malaria in Africa and called for urgent attention to save lives.

Kakooza commended the UN for supporting Uganda in its fight against HIV/AIDS.
