A 110-year-old man walked down the aisle at St. Stephens Church of Uganda in Kumi district on Sunday. David Livingstone Oitamong disclosed to the gathering that God told him to wed Eseza Igul, 76, before he dies.

Igul is his second wife with whom he has 12 children. The first wife, Rose Akello, died in the early 1980s, leaving behind three children.

Cornelius Okurut, one of Akello’s children, is in Igul’s age bracket. Thousands of Christians, who came from all parts of Teso, witnessed the ceremony.

The retired Rev. Can Yobu Osuret wedded the couple. Osuret, who urged Christians to emulate Oitamong, prayed that God would keep the couple alive for 100 years more.

Records at the church indicate that Oitamong was baptised in 1900 and has since remained a staunch Anglican. He keeps his Bible close to his chest wherever he goes and perfectly recites and interpretes the verses.

Oitamong can walk for 2km using a walking stick. “Being an elderly man, he remains an icon of Teso as a disciplinarian, a teacher, advisor and a host to visitors,” said Rev. Can. Charles Peter Okwii, the Kumi diocesan secretary.
