THE construction of a five-star hotel on the former Shimoni Demonstration School land begins at the end of July, when water and sewage lines are relocated, investment minister Aston Kajara told The New Vision.
The investor is Kingdom Kampala.
“They are working closely with the National Water and Sewerage Corporation and have relocated two water lines,†Kajara said.
This, however, is the second time the group has extended its kick-start date. The construction was slated for August last year but was extended to March this year and now to July.
The minister explained that the delay was because the investors had moved only two water and sewage pipelines but later discovered that several pipes, serving Nakasero hill, pass through the land.
Kajara added that Azure Holdings, a Kingdom Kampala majority shareholder, signed an agreement with the Inter-continental Hotels group to develop the land.
He said the plan for the five-star hotel was ready and the group got an environment impact assessment certificate from the National Environment Management Authority.
According to Kajara, the group is working with Landmark solutions from South Africa and a host of consultancies from the Netherlands.
Azure, a Dubai-based company, plans to construct an $80m (about sh170b) luxury hotel.
it will house an international convention centre, 20 conference halls, apartments, offices and a shopping mall.
In December 2008, the Saudi Arabian prince, Al Waleed, wrote to President Yoweri Museveni, saying his company, Kingdom Holdings, could not proceed with the construction of the hotel due to the global financial crisis.
