FOR decades, Africa has longed to host the World Cup. That dream has come true. Unfortunatley, workers are becoming restless. Efficiency has been affected as workers watch the matches while doing their work.

“People are partying more. There are three matches a day, which is nearly six hours of the soccer frenzy. Many stay up till late, often outside their homes, partying and drinking. After the last match, one finally retires at 1:00am tired. That will definitely affect work as people come to work tired and with hangovers, ” says Emmanuel Kwikiriza, the chief executive officer, Galactico Inc.

According to atomline.com, poor output at work is recorded, especially when popular teams play, as much productive time is wasted.

With advanced technology, it is difficult for employers to restrict workers from watching the matches during working hours. Workers can get the match on their mobile phones, on radio, etc.

Lawrence Irungu of Pentagon Communications Group, says in the service industry, the greatest reward to a client is service on time, without which a company’s reputation suffers.

Solutions
“It is World Cup — one thing everybody has looked forward to. There is no way you will tell an employee to miss a match. One can come back after the match and do their unfinished work. Alternatively, one can report early and be through by 2:30pm. As long as an employee does their duties, there should be no fuss,” says Kwikiriza.

“In our company, football comes after work. In that case some employees report early, do their work and watch matches in the afternoon. It’s important to prioritise what puts food on your table. However exciting the World Cup may be, it should not come between you and your work. There has got to be a middle ground where your diligence at work is unaffected,” says Irunga.
