Dirty UWA saga is truly disquieting

EDITOR: The confusion engulfing the Uganda Wildlife Authority is one of the worst and most embarrassing the country in recent times. The UWA board has thrown out the chief executive, Moses Mapesa, a respected conservationist with a clean record.

The accusations against him are flimsy. The probe committee set up by the trade minsiter, Kahinda Otafiire, also needs to be probed because its composition is highly suspect.

The UWA chairman, Dr. Boysier Muballe, being a medical doctor, is expected to first diagnose a problem before rushing to a decision.

My worry is what all this dirty and humiliating politics will leave Uganda's tourism, our top foreign exchange earner. Our already over-stretched courts are unnecessarily having a remarkable increase in the volume of cases that could have been avoided. Already, Mapesa and his colleagues have gone to court.

The cancellation of contracts like sport hunting, some dating as far back as the 90s leaves court as the only viable option for discontented parties. An evaluation of the financial costs the Government might suffer must be in billions of shillings.

UWA had begun registering tremendous progress from the revamped public-private partnerships in wild life management, where communities were already reaping the fruits from eco-lodges and revenue sharing from touristsm.

With personal interests overriding those of the wanainchi so heartlessly, all this is likely to be lost! What does the future hold?
