Renting a car is more flexible and cheaper than public transport. It gives you freedom to explore different destinations,” says Alfredo Minnelli, a tourist from the Netherlands.
However, some customers do not pay enough attention to the contracts when renting cars and later complain about what they perceive as extra charges or lack of adequate insurance cover.

John Kagolo, a travel agent, advises that before renting a vehicle, one should read through car rental reviews to find out who offers the best deals.
He adds that close attention should be paid to what is included in the reservation fee and what is not. Some rental companies charge extra if you cannot return the vehicle to their office on the same day.

“Read and understand the terms and conditions of your contract with the rental company. Ask for a copy prior to your rental so that you have plenty of time to read it,” he says.
“When travelling, it should be comfort rather than style that comes first,” Kagolo says.

Think about the insurance cover you want. In most cases, windscreens, tyres and roof damage are not covered.
Before driving away, Kagolo says one should insist on a thorough inspection of the vehicle. This will help you see every dent, chip and scratch.

Pay close attention to the wheels, windscreen and lights, which are common damage areas.
Kagolo says a vehicle should be returned during working hours so that someone can check the vehicle over with you.

“If you return a vehicle outside these hours, you will be liable for any damage occurring between the drop-off and the rental firm inspecting it,” he says.
In case of any additional charges upon return, ensure that you get an explanation and some supporting documentation before you pay.
