NAKASONGOLA Woman MP Grace Tubwita has told the East African countries to develop their cities.

“East African governments should prioritise the development of their cities. There should be departments created to cater for the planning and development of the cities,” Tubwita said

She was addressing women leaders at a workshop on the implementation of city development strategies in the Lake Victoria region at Hotel Africana in Kampala.

Tubwita said the slums were increasing as a result of poor planning. The workshop was organised by the UN-HABITAT.

Cecilia Njenga, a representative of the agency, noted that the Urban Management Programme, which is an extension of the city consultation methodology, had implemented development strategies in several cities in the Lake Victoria region.

“This is done to improve the capacity of municipal authorities to implement participatory management mechanisms. The cities include Kampala, Kisumu in Kenya, and Musoma in Tanzania,” Njenga explained.

She added that UN-HABITAT, through its Urban Management Programme, initiated the programme in early 2002 to strengthen the capacities of the cities.

Present was the assistant minister for Nairobi metropolitan development, Elizabeth Ngoro, who called on East African governments to start courses that will encourage the development of the East African Community.

“City planners should have workshops to refresh their minds with new skills of development. This will help control the problem of mushrooming slums in our cities,” Ngoro advised.
