Work on the 60km road linking Iganga to Kamuli has started, causing excitement among residents. Excavators started installing culverts in the valley sections as graders dug up drainage channels.

The route has been in a sorry state, with motorists from Iganga opting to use the longer route, which necessitated travelling to Jinja first before connecting to Kamuli district.

Some parts of the road have been sealed off by the contractors, leaving a one-way passage. The road, which starts from Walugogo valley, goes through Bulamagi and Bulongo sub-counties in Kiyunga district to Kamuli district.

The construction is expected to cost sh1.8b. “This had become a road for motorcycles as vehicles could not stand the potholes and rough surface,” said Dan Mwima, a resident of Bulamagi village, on Monday.

Phillip Naika of Kasolo trading centre wondered why the work was being done a few months to the 2011 general elections. “They are in a hurry. This has made the road very dusty. Accidents may even occur because politicians want to show they are working at the last minute,” Naika said.

Amina Namusuubo, a resident of Bwanalira, said the authorities should have availed the workplan for the road to the locals for accountability purposes. “We are only seeing workers doing this and that. It makes matters easy for us to be aware of the level of marram they are to set or which quality of culvert is to be used so that we can do community monitoring,” Namusuubo said.

The Bulamagi LC3 chairman, Abdullah Balunywa, said ETATS Construction Company was contracted to do the work. “The Government budgeted for this road in this financial year,” Balunywa explained.
