SHOP owners at Hawkers, the busiest and most congested shopping area in Arua municipality, want fire fighting training.

“I was in Kampala and saw the horrible fire that burnt Kiseka market.

“We cannot say it is a Kampala thing. We need to be trained in fire fighting so that we can contain such disasters,” said Lillian Badaru, a garments dealer in Hawkers.

She also said there is need to decongest the place.

The fenced area (Hawkers) houses over 800 shops, tailors and food vendors.

The Arua Hill Division chairman, where the market is located, Romano Matua, appealed to the people to be cooperative and protect each other’s property.

Matua acknowledged that the district lacked fire fighting equipment and called for vigilance.

“We shall liaise with the Police to give them tips to prevent fire outbreaks,” he said.

Matua also said they were planning to separate food vendors and the people who iron clothes to avoid fire accidents.
