EDITOR: International Hospital Kampala (IHK)has recently opened a children’s clinic at the hospital. This is great! The clinic has a dedicated staff from a front desk person to a general practitioner, a paediatrician and a nurse.

It is a child friendly environment with warm colours, miniature furniture, books and puzzles to keep tiny hands busy. What this also means is that there is less stress from the staff to rush through the usually long queues, or screaming, squirming children.

Believe it or not the children are so busy entertaining themselves that they have no time to run around corridors disrupting other patients and staff, and those that are weak are given a bed to lie down in an adjacent room.

The parents are comfortable enough to sit through the short wait knowing there are no cross infections from adult patients. After many years of waiting for my children to see a doctor or specialist, sometimes, over two hours, I must say this is truly a welcome change.

However, I suggest the clinic remains open till 9:00pm to allow for working parents to make it before close of day and to display the clinic's hours of operation. Bravo, IHK.
