Ex-regional governer laid to rest in Sironko

THE first secretary general of the then Bugisu district was on Saturday laid to rest in Bumayamba village in Buyobo sub-county in Sironko district. Eliezar Walyemila Mashate, 88, died at his home in Nkoma in Mbale municipality.

THE first secretary general of the then Bugisu district was on Saturday laid to rest in Bumayamba village in Buyobo sub-county in Sironko district. Eliezar Walyemila Mashate, 88, died at his home in Nkoma in Mbale municipality.

Mashate started his education at Nambulu Primary School before joining Nabumali Junior School, where he sat his Junior III leaving examinations. He was employed by the British colonial government in 1939 as a recruiting clerk for the King’s African Rifles.

Mashate later secured employment with Bugisu Coffee Scheme before joining the meteorology department where he served at Entebbe, Kabale and Pakwach stations.

He also served as bursar at Masaba Junior School, joined politics in 1957 where he teamed up with the late Ignatius Musazi in the Uganda National Congress.

In 1962, Mashate contested for a Parliament seat on the Uganda People’s Congress ticket. After the overthrow of the military regime of Idi Amin in 1979, Prof. Yusuf Lule appointed him governor for eastern region.

In 1980, Mashate was elected national vice-chairman of the Democratic Party, but he joined the National Resistance Movement liberation struggle a year later where he remained a staunch supporter till his death.

Mashate is survived by a wife, 16 children and several grand and great grandchildren. Mashate, a brother to Prof. Dan Wadada Nabudere, is the father of UK-based lawyer Peter Magomu Mashate, who recently lost in the Bungokho North parliamentary NRM party primaries to the incumbent MP, Yahaya Gudoi Wojje.
