THE vice-chancellor Uganda Christian University, Mukono Rev. Dr. John Ssenyonyi has castigated Uganda’s education system.

He said: “ It puts more emphasis on passing exams instead of imparting learners with skills and knowledge for national development”.

Dr. Ssenyonyi was addressing the challenges of secondary education at Ndejje Senior Secondary School in Luweero district recently.

He called for a review of the curriculum to make it more relevant to the demands of the learners and the country.

Dr. Ssenyonyi advised parents to censor what their children watch on the Internet and television.

“Parents should give their children, more books to read since the books are a good tool in improving cognitive skills than watching television,” he said.

Three former students of the school, including, Dr Ssenyonyi, the assistant commissioner of Police and spokesperson Judith Nabakooba and UPDF Col Herbert Kaleeba were given the school’s highest award the ‘Hero of the Spear’.

Col. Kaleeba, also a lecturer with the UPDF Senior Officers College in Jinja, said he was humbled by the award.
