EDITOR: April 17 was a very special day for the Batooro and their kingdom. Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV assumed full authority over his kingdom.

However, six months down the road, this special day has been overshadowed by the current stand-off in the kingdom caused by a few individuals who have no respect for the king and his subjects. Unfortunately all this is happening without a sign of the Batooro taking keen interest in the affairs of their kingdom.

They have all kept quiet! We need to step up activism to help stabilise our beloved kingdom. It can be in many forms like holding peaceful demonstrations to express our grievances about what is happening in Toro.

We should not allow a few ‘greedy’ individuals to hold us hostage in our kingdom. If Oyo wants to lead his kingdom wisely, he needs to listen to his subjects and not to a few individuals who want to bring him and his kingdom down.

Let us invest some of our time and energy in our cultural heritage as we owe it to future generations. We do not have to be violent. We just need to be “patriotic” and participatory at every stage. If the Batooro cannot salvage their kingdom from the dogs, then a referendum should determine its destiny.
