The pleasant surprise of a perfect wedding

LATELY I have caught myself grumbling about how predictable and monotonous weddings have become. I had not been to a wedding that had moved me deeply, since about 10 years ago.

I usually shy away from wedding receptions because I cannot bear to sit through the whole speeches, memory lane and cake cutting routine. I usually pass my contribution to the couple and maybe witness the vows and with that my participation in a wedding ceremony is done.

Not even my unwavering devotion to cakes can lure me to a wedding. However, last weekend, I had to attend a wedding for which I needed to be fully involved. As much as I had geared myself up for the typical routine, I was pleasantly surprised.

The whole surprise effect began at the moment I went to greet the bride before her vows, as she waited in the car. On opening the car door, I was caught off-guard by her sheer beauty and the significance of this moment for her.

Her beauty was not the MAC plastered kind, but the rare kind that radiated from a place so deep within her that it illuminated her very presence. She was happy, she looked nervous; she looked beautiful in the true sense of the word.

Her whole appearance was a tear-jerking experience for me, needless to say; I shamefully sniffed my way through the vows!

The second pleasant deviation from the norm was the song to which the bridal entourage entered the reception venue. No, it was not some soppy love song like Here and Now by Luther Vandross, it was a funky remix of Happy People by R.Kelly.

The entourage danced their way to the high table; not in a stiff, choreographed kind of way, but in a happy celebratory way, that infected the guests with the same dancing bug.

Now, you may say that sounds strange, it would have sounded strange to me too but I was among the guests who danced the most. The decor was ‘dream’ like, and that had little to do with flowers!

The speeches were short and meaningful and the speakers conscious of the need to rejoice rather than reminisce. There was a refreshing absence of pomp and ‘who is who’ demeanour.

The only celebrities were the groom and bride; as it should be. I have stated before, that my palette has been designed specifically to discern cake and discern this wedding cake it did.

Let us just say, the moment I tasted it, the moment went down in my history as pivotal. Those of you who love cake like I do, would most definitely know about that sublime moment when you first taste a divine cake.

I could go on about the perfection of this wedding day, but maybe words would not be able to define the emotion of it adequately.

However, I could not have let it pass without mention. Dee and Maz; I pray that your perfect wedding day is the beginning of the perfect marriage.
