Grace Gibson, a housewife in Bukoto, Mukalanzi zone, says she was forced to pierce all her children’s ears to prevent them from witchdoctors who sacrifice children. She pierced her son’s ears when he was about one year old. Gibson applied methylated spirit around the earlobes until the wounds healed.

Caroline Nabifo, a security guard, pierced her daughter’s ears to protect her from people who practice child sacrifice. Nabifo says she will pierce all her children’s ears to protect them. She applied spirit on the ears to aid fast-healing.

Milly Acayo, a charcoal seller, says she pierced all her children’s ears. She consulted a doctor and was advised to apply methylated spirit on the wounds until they healed.

Lydia Tumwine, a housewife in Nakawa, Kampala, says she does not believe in piercing children’s ears, especially boys’ because “protection comes from God.” However, Tumwine says it is okay for a mother to pierce her daughter’s ears for beauty purposes.
