A baby boy that had been dumped on a street in Mbarara by its mother was on Saturday handed back to her. The mother, Faridah Batamuriza, received the child from the south-western regional Police spokesperson, Polly Namaye, at Mbarara Central Police Station.

Batamuriza abandoned the baby on October 28, claiming its father had failed to look after them. However, her neighbour, Queen Mukasa, picked the baby from the street and reported the matter to the Police. She has also been looking after the boy.

The Police have since been hunting for Batamuriza. On Saturday, she called Mukasa and expressed willingness to take back her child. Mukasa reported the matter to the Police, who arranged to hand over the baby.

Namaye said Batamuriza was released on Police bond, but the Police would keep an eye on her to ensure that she gives the child adequate care.

She said Batamuriza would be arrested if she abandoned the child again.
