SEVEN gang members have been arrested in connection with a spate of iron-bar murders in Mukono.

Some of the suspects, who are detained at different Police stations to prevent them from sharing information, have confessed to being involved in the murders.

The arrests follow heavy Police deployment in Seeta and Mukono towns, where several killings had taken place within one month.

One of the gang leaders, Ali Muyomba alias Escobar, 27, a resident of Nasuuti in Mukono town, was also arrested.

The Police discovered that Escobar had been released from jail a month before, after serving a robbery sentence.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman, Idd Ssenkumbi, told journalists yesterday that Escobar helped them to apprehend six of his colleagues, all residents of Mukono. Several others are still on the run.

Ssenkumbi said the suspect confessed to using strangulation instead of iron bars.

According to Ssenkumbi, Escobar said he strangled Nalongo Najjumba, a resident of Kikooza zone in Mukono town council without using any tool.

The suspect revealed a lot of information to investigators that helped them arrest his colleague, Nelson Owunyu alias Drogba, a resident of Nantabulirirwa zone in Goma sub-county.

Others arrested were Juma Kateregga and David Nsubuga, both residents of Nantabulirirwa, Julius Kiberu of Namiryango, Brian Kamulegeya of Bagala zone and Ronald Matte of Naggalama.

The Police said most of the suspects had been jailed before over similar cases.

Ssenkumbi said they had intensified their investigations and were getting closer to other suspects.

“We have obtained vital information from the suspects who have also narrated to us how they have been executing their missions and the tools they have been using,” he said.

The New Vision last week reported how Irion-bar men had killed six people and injured several others in Mukono district within the first three weeks of December, causing fear among residents.

The thugs were targeting mostly boda boda riders and women working in markets, whom they waylay at night.
