A CARJACKER was hanging on to dear life on Thursday night after a mob dragged him off the driver’s seat of a sleek Toyota Prado he had broken into, and beat him unconscious.

A daring John Wesonga, according to a graduated tax ticket found in his pocket, broke into the vehicle he found parked at City Bar on Kampala Road.

He ignored its siren as he tried to drive away, Police and witnesses said. He later removed its automated window switches.

The dark green Prado, reg. No UAE 411C, belongs to Dr. Vincent Karuhanga, of Friends Clinic near City Bar. He is also a columnist with the Monitor newspaper.

“I was working on some patients when a friend asked me what was wrong with my car, after he saw people gather around it,” he said.

Also recovered from Wesonga’s pockets were telephone numbers of contacts in Nairobi, Mombasa and Dar es Salaam. The tax tickets showed he paid sh100,000 and was a resident of Kololo.

After dragging him out of the vehicle, Wesonga broke loose from the mob and fled towards the Bank of Baroda branch but his luck ran out when he was intercepted, metres away from the Railways goodshed.

The mob then descended on him, kicking and punching Wesonga before a Police patrol vehicle arrived.

Barely able to sit or stand, he was thrown on the back of the patrol pick-up truck and taken to Central Police Station.

Education minister Prof. Kidhu Makubuya recently lost his official Toyota Landcruiser vehicle to carjackers who disengaged the car’s alarms system.

The car was later recovered in Kenya.
