THE editor of Mazima, a Luganda weekly news pamphlet, was last week sent back to Luzira prison after failing to pay sh0.5m for bail.

Vincent Matovu, 34, is facing sedition charges

He is accused of publishing stories alleging that Joseph Kony’s rebels had killed thousands of UPDF soldiers and captured Pader and Kapchorwa districts.

Appearing before a Buganda Road Court Grade One magistrate Susan Kanyange, Matovu was granted bail but failed to pay the money. Mazima, printed in Katwe, a Kampala suburb and with small circulation within the city, has not appeared on the streets since December.

State prosecutor Marion Achio said on November 1, last year in volume no.44 of Mazima, Matovu published stories believed to be seditious.

She said the paper published other false and alarming reports on October 28, last year. She said the stories were meant to create disaffecion against the Government.
