SC Villa yesterday erased a self doubt that had developed after being too often on the losing side in battles with Yanga.

An own goal and a second half strike by skipper Edgar Watson gave the Ugandan champions a solid 2-0 victory yesterday at Mandela stadium.

Philip Ssozi was man of the match, and despite failing to get on the scoresheet, supplied the two passes that gave Villa victory as the Council of East and Central African Football Associations(CECAFA) Club championships kicked off with two games at Mandela stadium.

The diminutive roving winger helped Villa gain the lead as early as the 11th minute. He forced Yanga’s defender Paul Musanja to send the ball into his own net

Five minutes after interval, Watson found the net when he headed in Ssozi’s cross for Villa’s second goal.

And though Ssozi made more telling passes, the lack of finishers foiled Villa’s attempt to boost their goal run.

It was not all one way traffic though, as Villa’s defence line of Robert Tumusime, Sula Walusimbi and Godfrey Kateregga always came in to save goal keeper Hannington Kalyesubula.

“We played well. Yanga is a good team with confidence on the ball but we got our rhythm right,” Villa coach Micho Sredojevic said after the match.

Their was earlier more drama in the game handled by Somali referee Abdul Abdile.

At one point in the game, Walusimbi was shown a second yellow card but was not sent off by Abdille.

Efforts for Yanga coach Jack Chamangwana to get justice were futile, as the match had already restarted.

Walusimbi was substituted by Shaban Kisinga minutes after.

“It is unfair. It is not justice to us,” Chamangwana said after the match.

In the day’s first game, Red Sea’s Biniam Fissehaye slotted in a second half pass from Haile Goitom to give them a win over Khartoum 3.
