IF crowds were judges at beauty contests, the Miss Kampala International University (KIU) beauty title would probably be a different story.
Carol Cope, who scooped the title last Saturday, was never the crowd favourite. Yet she outsmarted 14 of her rivals to grab the top honours.
But as is the case, it is never up to the crowd to make such decisions but rather the judges. And they did their job pretty well on Saturday at the inaugural Miss KIU beauty pageant, held at the chilly Hotel African Pool-side.
Cope, an extremely light skinned complexion, was initially contestant number two but eventually took the first slot to become the number one kyana at the Kansanga-based campus.
The function, which was delayed by over two hours for no particular reason, started on a good note with a number of bravura performances from the students.
They danced, mimed and excited the crowd. And talking of crowds, this was a mammoth one. The most interesting part was that in every group of five people, three were well-rounded dressed to kill ‘panty less’ babes. You missed a lot if you never made it up to here.
At first, the crowd was worked into believing contestants were from the various African countries, until they discovered the theme of the event, Unity in Diversity. KIU is an institution with diverse student origin.
Guest of Honour was German ambassador, Klaus Holderbaum, who is also known among Kampala socialites as the envoy who makes parties happen. He clapped away in excitement as he shared jokes with Presidential Press Secretary, Mary Karooro Okurut.
First on stage was singer, Halima Namakula’s daughter, Rachael, dressed in a white flowing wedding gown, who remarkably did Bryan Adams Everything I do and did it well on the music system provided by Silk Mobile.
Other curtain-raising performing groups included St. A., VIP, Twenty-Four-Seven and Rap Philosophy. Michael Ross did his top-of-the-charts Senorita.
The MC for the evening, Sanyu FM’s Mitch was just great. His humour held the crowd together, at one time leaving the stage to share jokes with the crowd.
He danced, interviewed one of the contestants in French and generally worked the crowd. He would have made it bigger had he not become designer cloths’ dealer, Akcher Jalal’s salesman, when he boasted about his suit.
Unlike a number of other shows, the sound system was generally good, the organisation well planned, courtesy of The Warehouse event organisers. For their debut show, one can only hope for the better in future.
Eventually, the contestant came on stage, dressed in KIU T-shirts. They included five boys, whose clear favourite was Diploma of Education student, Emma Muhigane. His was the only case where the crowd agreed with the judges. He won.
For creativity, some of the students donned fish costume, newspapers, banana fibre and leaves. Surprisingly, one of them had guts to wrap herself with polythene paper. There was a mad dash by an army of photographers after another appeared on stage, spotting a green sisal bra.
During question time, one male contestant was asked what he would love to achieve in life and he just said: “To get the prettiest woman in Uganda.”
The announcements came at around midnight. Shortly before, Kenya Airways, one of the event sponsors, upgraded their grand prize of a trip from Nairobi to Johannesburg.
Annie Grace Natukunda and Ivan Michael Iguru were first runners-up in the female and male categories, respectively.
Emma Muhigane lived up to the crowd’s expectations by taking over the most coveted crown that night while Carol Cope grabbed the Miss KIU queen, thanks to her confidence and open-minded aura.

She told The New Vision that she went through Namasagali and Aga Khan High School before joining KIU. Born to the late Allan and Marie Cope, the smiling beauty comes fourth in the family of seven.
She works at Simba Telecom, Garden City and she is a student of International Business Studies at KIU.
The show, co-sponsored by Bell Lager, Hotel Africana, Club Silk, WBS TV and Sanyu FM came to an end after that and nobody was heard complaining. Ends
