CLEARLY fired by the legendary cupid’s arrow, many couples streamed into the lobby of Hotel Equatoria for the Valentine’s night, most of them holding hands.
The lovers, dressed to kill, were greeted at the entrance with a red rose for the ladies and a ringed garland of petals for the men, which they wore around their necks, courtesy of the sh40,000 dinner ticket, they had each purchased.
After a welcome cocktail drink, ecstacy followed after guests had settled at their dinner tables by the poolside. Guests even ordered for their own drinks from the open bar.
The guests were expected to have arrived by 7.00pm but dinner did not start until after an hour later. The setting was your ideal romantic atmosphere; well-laid dinner tables with white and red tablecloths and red candles. The guests had cheerful faces.
There were small waves in the sky-blue swimming pool. Cold winds occasionally swept by.
The lovers did not kiss, probably because there was no initiative by the organisers. A couple that particularly caught my attention was one feeding each other.
The usual socialities were absent. The only common party animal was businessman Gordon Wavamunno. Mrs. Karim Hirji was the host.
The guests appeared to enjoy their food –– a continental buffet, quietly. Most of them looked each other in the eye and you could tell that love was in the air. Guests were entertained by the hotel’s resident band, Bonge Musica, (local musician Elly Wamala would have been uneasy to hear a Congolese musician doing his song, Viola), but our lovers stayed virtually glued to their seats, even long after dinner.
At about 10.00pm, the master of ceremony announced a ruffle draw in which three couples won two-litre Pepsi bottles, beer hampers from Uganda Breweries and a weekend for two at the hotel.
Dr. Benson Tumwesigye and his wife, were announced winners of a trip to Dubai, sponsored by Kenya Airways. At 11.00pm, the band closed shop and it was time for the guests to leave, till February 14 next year. Ends
