George Bush, the President of America is determined to go to wage war on Iraq, with the backing of Tony Blair, the Prime Minister of Britain.
Both Bush and Blair want to remove Saddam Hussein who is the president of Iraq, from power.
So far they have sent close to 300,000 soldier to the border of Iraq in preparation for a war.
Bush says he is fighting Saddam because he believes that he has deadly weapons commonly known as ‘weapons of mass destruction.’
These are weapons that can kill millions of people at go and destroy large areas.
When used, their effects continue years after they have exploded. People then suffer from diseases like cancer, brain damage and other abnormalities.
Pregnant mothers giving birth to premature babies or babies who are born with parts of their bodies missing or not functioning properly.
Weapons of mass destruction also destroy our environment.
The United Nation has sent a team of inspectors to Iraq to see whether Iraq has these weapons and if so, to make sure that they are destroyed.
America and some other countries also have weapons of mass destruction. The Americans believe however, that they are more responsible than Saddam Hussein.
Ever since the terrorist attack on America on September 11th 2001, the Americans think that they are not safe, as long as Saddam has these weapons.
Bush also says ever since Saddam became the President of Iraq in 1979, he has been very cruel to his own people so as to stay in power.
America and the countries that support her say they want to bring freedom and democracy to the people of Iraqi and make the world a safer place to live in.
But Saddam and those who support him say Bush wants to go to war with Iraq so as control Iraq’s wealth by taking her oil. Iraq is the world’s second largest producer of oil.
America and Iraq last went to war in 1990 after Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait. Americs under George Bush senior, the father of the current President of America.
Bush senior bombed Iraq until Saddam left Kuwait.
Iraq is found in the Middle East.
If the war on Iraq takes place, the prices of oil all over the world are likely to increase.
This will have an effect on all the countries in the world, including Uganda.
For example, transport fares in taxis will increase making it difficult for people to travel.
However, that will not be the only effect of the war. The innocent people of Iraq will die especially the women and children, who are the people who usually suffer the most in wars.
Because of these reasons, some countries like China, Russia, Germany and France want the United Nations inspectors to be given more time to find out if Saddam really has weapons of mass destruction.
Last weekend, over six million people all over the world marched in the streets to show that they do not want war.
Such street marches are called demonstrations.
Most of those against the war, say other countries like Israel, North Korea, Pakistan, and India also have weapons of mass destruction and yet America has not tried to fight them.
Last Wednesday, more than 400 school children in Britain left their classrooms and joined millions of others to demonstrators against the war.
