Sir—I would like to extend my appreciation to the Uganda Human Rights Commission for the good job so far done. Inspite of its limitations, I can openly say that the commission under the chairperson Margaret Sekaggya has achieved a lot.
In the past, Uganda was one of the countries with the highest number of human rights abuses. Former presidents like Idi Amin, Milton Obote and many others seemed not to see any value in human life. People were killed at random over any flimsy reason. Some prisoners were forced to eat inedible items like bathroom slippers and torture was the order of the day.
There was no where one could voice out their grievance. Uganda Human Rights Commission, formed in November 1996, puts the government on its toes in case of any human rights abuses. I think Ugandans have all the reason to be proud of this as it is exemplary to other countries in the region.
Uganda is not free of human rights abuses but to a great degree there is an enormous improvement. Uganda human rights commission, I wish you the best.
