The story so far:
Samsoni disappears from the house during play one morning. Muko and Nalu are instructed to find him.

The story continues:
Muko took the path down to the lake and Nalu walked to Hajati’s shop. Abdul was playing on the verandah.
“Have you seen your friend Samsoni?” Nalu asked.
“Give me money and I will tell you.”
“Stop being silly, Samsoni is lost.”
“Lost!” Hajati came bustling out from inside the shop. “Did I hear you say your brother is lost!” Her fat hands grabbed Nalu’s shoulders. “I knew it, I knew this would happen!” cried Hajati.
“What!” Nalu gasped. “You knew what would happen?”
“Your little brother. He is nothing but a scoundrel. The whole village knows it. Every single person in Kauka. If he hasn’t cheated one of us, he has lied. If he hasn’t lied he has been rude. If he hasn’t been rude, he has spoilt property. Now he has finally done something sooooo bad, he has gone into hiding!”
“But he’s only seven years old!” Nalu cried.
“A criminal mind starts young!”
Hajati clicked her fingers, clucked in Nalu’s face, and then triumphantly turned back into her shop, her long skirt sweeping up dust behind her.”
Nalu hurried home to report what Hajati had said.
“The whole village is cross with him and that’s why he’s hiding Mama. He has done a lot of bad things.”
Mrs. Mulondo shook her head as she listened.
“My angel, my sweet Samsoni I can’t believe this! May be Muko will find him. Samsoni must have gone to watch the fishermen.”
When Muko returned Samsoni wasn’t with him.
“The fishermen told me that a boy of about seven, came down to the lake and got into a canoe with some rough looking men. The canoe was loaded with household property and it had a motor engine on one end. The canoe sped off towards the islands.”
Mrs. Mulondo clutched her heart and began desperately gasping for air.
