LANDSLIDES have destroyed homes, a church, crops and livestock worth millions of shillings in Katulu village, Kilembe sub- county, Kasese district

LANDSLIDES have destroyed homes, a church, crops and livestock worth millions of shillings in Katulu village, Kilembe sub- county, Kasese district, reports ohn Nzinjah.

The Katulu village council secretary, Charles Muhesi, said the weekend landslides, that followed five days of heavy rains in the Rwenzori mountains, left over 30 people homeless and destroyed Katulu Church of Uganda building.

Local leaders named the most affected families as that of Steven Rwasanga, Abdallah Bitaka, Mrs. Zeresi Thasimwa and Kezia Muhesi.

They said many residents had fled for fear of more landslide disaster.

The Kilembe sub-county chairman, Johnson Kamalha, said the incident was the second in two years. The one in 2001 had left over 48 families displaced and one person dead.

“We are lucky that we don’t have any report of deaths in the weekend landslides,” he said.

Kamalha said the sub-county authorities had appealed to the district disaster preparedness committee to find ways of assisting the affected people.

However, the village councillors said the district did not come to their rescue when the landslide occurred in 2001.
