THE state minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Mondo Kagonyera, has asked engineers to spearhead the investigations in the cost of the construction of the Bujagali dam project.

This comes after the National Association of Professional Environmentalists (NAPE) complained that the dam would have cost $300m to generate 500 megawatts of electricity.

The World Bank approved $500m for the completion of the project by the end of 2004.

Kagonyera, who read a speech on behalf of the Prime Minister, was yesterday speaking at the opening of a two-day 8th Uganda Institute of Professional Engineers (UIPE) national technology conference at the International Conference Centre.

“You are best-placed to tell us how to ensure value for money on numerous development projects,” he said. He urged engineers and technology experts to value their profession.
