A TOTAL of 4,686 children were defiled last year, the Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Katumba Wamala, has said.

Katumba, who was chief guest at the Teachers of Mengo SS. Association Annual General Meeting in Kampala on Saturday, said defilement was more rampant than other crimes among the youth.

“This is one of the crimes which are going up while other crimes are going down. It is an area of concern. We have to work as a team to save these girls from being victims of crime at an early stage,” Katumba said.

He said the rate at which the youth are involved in murder crimes is second to defilement. He advised parents to counsel their children.

“Get close to them. Let us forget the issue that upbringing of children is a responsibility of sengas,” he said, “You must cultivate friendship with your children so that they know these crimes,” Katumba said.

Katumba advised parents and schools to involve the youth in constructive activities.
He said unstable families lead children to commit crimes.

“If you are a single parent and you go on bringing different faces at homes, what kind of message do you give your child?,” he asked.
