THE Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has applied for US$125,000 (sh231.2m) grant from FIFA to support the Uganda Cranes and U-23 preparations.

According to the federation’s assistant treasurer Mohammed Wardrif, the fund, part of the 2003 FIFA development grant, will also help offset a few of the federation’s debts accrued in the past.

“We have sent a requisition for part of that money that should support our soccer campaigns for the senior and youth sides. We used part of it to support the qualifier against Rwanda and hope to receive part of it early enough.

“The proposal for that remaining fund percentage will be verified by the international federation’s finance committee this month and we anxiously await a positive reply. We however hope that the government tops up the figure as well,” he said.

Wardrif had earlier disclosed that an expenditure of sh200m had been estimated to fully prepare both teams. The U-23 youth side is preparing for an Olympics qualifier against Seychelles on June 26.

The money dispatched in an annual phase since 1999 goes to sh1.85bn.

In a related development, the federation has tabled its sh50m budget support proposal to government ass part of this year’s financial relief that government promised.
