UGANDA and Kenya have set up a joint security committee to deal with cross-border cattle raids and other acts of lawlessness by armed pastoralists.
The state minister for Karamoja affairs, Peter Lokeris, said the committee would be able to track down raiders who had been engaged in cross-border cattle thefts.
“The two governments have now put in place a security committee to deal with cross-border cattle raids,” Lokeris said.
He was opening a stakeholders’ workshop on the decentralised animal health management.
The workshop, held at Eneku village, Soroti was organised by the Karamoja Livestock Development Forum in conjunction with the Kenya-based Community Livestock Initiative Programme.
It was aimed at drawing a training manual for the community animal health workers who were to provide livestock healthcare services in Karamoja.
The objective of the workshop was to understand, appreciate and recognise pastoralism as a viable lifestyle and major economic activity in the country. Ends
