THE Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) assistant commissioner for customs who is accused of causing a financial loss of sh500m in undervalued goods, was yesterday released by the High Court, reports Hillary Kiirya.

Evelyn Nyakato, through her lawyer Edwin Karugire, was bailed out of jail at sh2m and her sureties bonded to court at sh50m. She has been on remand in Luzira prison since July 10.

Nyakato was released on grounds of grave illnesses which the prison health personnel, in their letter to court, said was beyond their control. Disability was one of the grounds cited by her lawyer.

However, the presiding judge, Yokoram Bamwine, warned her sureties, Jinja Municipality West MP, Harry Kasigwa, businessman, Bob Kabonero and Fred Mwesigwa not to sign the papers if they did not have sh50m on their accounts.
