DAIRY Corporation Limited plans to export about 900,000 litres of milk before the end of the year.
By David Muwanga DAIRY Corporation Limited plans to export about 900,000 litres of milk before the end of the year. This follows the increased demand for locally processed milk in Tanzania. During the last month, 100,000 litres was bought by Tanzania’s Royal Dairy Products Limited based in Dar es Salaam. “So far we have sent over 100,000 litres in a period of one month. Another consignment of 300,000 litres is ready for transportation to Tanzania, while we are packing another 600,000 litres,†Edison Kadoma, the Dairy Corporation marketing manager said last week. “We have a production capacity of 60,000 litres per day for UHT milk, while the capacity for pasteurised milk is 130,000 litres per day. So we are capable of supplying milk to our counterparts in Tanzania,†he said. He said shipment is by Uganda Railways Corporation across Lake Victoria. He said Dairy Corporation is selling milk companies in Tanzania who in turn sell to the consumers. “Our milk is wholesome, with a distinct freshness and sourced from the best farmlands in Uganda where cows are grazed on natural pastures, unlike those that are fed on genetically modified plants,†he said. He however conceded that domestic consumption of UHT milk is still relatively low due the high retail prices. “As a result, local people turn to unprocessed milk without considering quality. This is due to the high prices that are determined by the quality of packaging,†he said. He said Rwanda imports milk from Uganda under the brand name, ‘VIVA’ through a firm called Laiterie-de-Nyabisindu Dairy Industry. “In both cases, we have already signed co-packaging agreements. Our role is to collect milk, process it and pack it in materials provided by a multinational company called Tetra Pak who have a regional operation in Kenya.†He said Uganda lacks a company that can manufacture paper boxes that can adequately and safely store UHT milk for a year without refrigeration. He said the company plans to step up exports to Rwanda. Kadoma said it would be in September when they could review the cash returns from the deals. “But we are getting good money,†he said. Ends
