PETER Rukindo on Sunday won the Mbarara golf Open, his first union title three years since he took up the game.

The champion from Fort Portal’s Toro Club, carded 132 nett after two rounds of a consistent display on the par-70 course.

Rukindo, playing off handicap 14, posted 67 on Saturday and went better with 65 on Sunday.

“It is such a great feeling to win especially away from my home course and just three years after I started playing the game,” Rukindo said.

But the winner had to contend with the dry and fast greens, a condition caused by long spells of sweltering temperatures.

“I had a problem with the greens, more so on the first day but I am lucky this did not ruin my game strategy,” Rukindo said.

Rukindo’s display on the second 18 holes was enriched by four birdies, the last on the par-3 18th green.

Day one leader Godfrey Light, who brought 64, faded on the final day when he played 80.

Light came under investigation after taking the lead for playing under a wrong handicap.

A disputes committee later re-adjusted his handicap to 23 and score to 69.

Entebbe player Rita Kahuju took the ladies title at 153 ahead of Joan Kyatuka of Mbarara at 161 and Kampala’s Ruth Okwele at 169.
