LAY Catholic leaders in Kampala Archdiocese have supported Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala’s (right) stance opposing the lifting of the two-term limit for the Presidency.

The leaders said once such an amendment was entrenched in the Constitution, there was a possibility that future leaders would misuse the ‘loophole’ to cling to power.

The Catholic leaders said they were “desirous of the Constitution, the democratisation process and mantainance of peace and harmony in the country.”

“We the 165 members of the Archdiocesan Pastoral council....resolve and it’s hereby resolved to unanimously agree and fully support the position held by our Ordinary, His Emminence Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala and as expressed in his statement at the news conference held at his residence on September 25, 2003,” read a statement by the leaders.

The Septermber 30 release was signed by the Archdiocese information commissioner, Freddie Sekitto.

Wamala told reporters on his return from Rome recently that he did not support the Cabinet proposal to the Constitutional Review Commission (CRC) that the two-term limit for the presidency be lifted.

The views were presented by the Vice-President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, recently.

“Including such a proposal in the Constitution is very dangerous because it stifles leadership and breeds dictators,” Wamala told journalists.
