THE economy has recovered, achieved diversification and now needs transformation of the impoverished society into an industrialised one, President Yoweri Museveni said in Kampala yesterday.

Opening the 11th Uganda International Trade Fair at the Uganda Manufacturers Association show ground at Lugogo, Museveni said, “I notice that in the last 17 years, the economy has recovered and been diversified.”

He was addressing representatives of more than 500 local and international exhibitors from Africa, Asia, Europe and the United States after he had toured some of the stalls.

“Basic necessities like soap, beer, cigarettes, building materials are now available in the shops. The informal sectors like magendo and the kibanda have died out.

“The transport sector is booming with private buses, matatus, bodaboda. The entertainment industry is thriving producing the Gaetanos,” he said drawing laughter. He was referring to Ugandan Big Brother Housemate finalist.

Other speakers included tourism, trade and industry minister, Edward Rugumayo, the chairperson of the East African Business Council, James Mulwana and the UMA chairperson, Abid Alam.

Madhvani emerged best exhibitor. Thousands of visitors are expected to visit the show.
