THE Prime Minister, Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, has invited the Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) board to meet and resolve the persistent complaint about high power tariffs. The meeting will take place on Friday October 24 at his office in Kampala.
Manufacturers say that they are faced with the highest power costs in the region, which makes their products uncompetitive due to higher production costs. The UMA board is currently chaired by Abid Alam.
“I have arranged an interface between you and the Minister of Energy (Sdya Bbumba) to deliberate on the issue of high power tariffs, and resolve it once and for all,” Nsibambi said while officially closing the Uganda International Trade Fair (UGITF) 2003 on Monday.
Nsibambi said that the only way to forward for the economy, is to add value to locally produced goods, create employment and expand the national tax base.
He said, “We have an employment crisis on our hands, and reports say that some people walk for as many as three years without finding a job. The economy should be able to produce good quality products, expand and absorb all the job seekers,” he said.
During day, Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited charges manufacturers about sh89 per unit, which goes down to sh56 per unit during the night.
Alam requested the Government to push for a joint concession in running the regional railway system, for easy movement of goods, services and individuals across the East African Community.
He said the proposed the East African Customs Union, which is expected to come in effect at the end of November, will require the Government to be more sensitive to local industries’ production problems.
