STATE minister for information Dr. Nsaba Buturo has said Uganda Television and Radio Uganda will soon be transformed into a corporation to run on a commercial basis, report John Odyek and Charles Ariko.

Buturo told journalists yesterday that commercial discipline would change the quality of services and welfare of staff of the two institutions.

This was during a meeting he held with the executive of the National Institute of Journalists of Uganda at the Office of the President, Nakasero.

“The staff of UTV and Radio Uganda are not in good shape and that has affected the quality of work. I am keen to see the transformation of UTV and Radio Uganda into a corporation so that people are paid according to their skills,” he said.

He said journalists and the Government should work together to serve Ugandans, adding that journalists should be at the centre of debate about the current issues in Uganda.

He said journalists could show people that they can belong to different political groups but remain friends.

“Journalists should be important guides of political thinking and the future of Uganda,” he said.

He said Uganda would soon become the second African country to pass a law allowing everybody to have freedom of access to information.

The minister said training, staff welfare and local programming would be taken into consideration before media houses are licensed, and urged the media to be aggressive but accurate while carrying out their duties.
