PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni next week assumes the chairmanship of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

IGAD is a sub-regional organisation formed by seven countries of the East and Horn of Africa.

Sudanese President Omar el Bashir, who is the current chairman, is among the seven Heads of State expected in Kampala for the 10th IGAD summit which Uganda will be hosting for the first time.

Bashir last visited Uganda in July 2002, where for the first time he had a historic handshake with the Sudanese Peoples Liberation Army rebel leader, Col. John Garang, after a meeting chaired by President Museveni.

The summit takes place at the International Conference Centre for the delegates drawn from Sudan, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Eritrea and the host Uganda.

A statement from the foreign affairs ministry said President Joachim Chissano of Mozambique would attend the summit in his capacity as the current chairman of the African Union.

Also expected are the secretary-generals of the East African Community, COMESA, African Union and a representative of the UN chief.

The summit is expected to concentrate on the issue of peace in Sudan and Somalia as well as the economy, agriculture and development issues generally.
