UNICEF country representative Martin Mogwanja has advised Kotido district officials to find a lasting solution to the internally displaced primary school children from Pader and Kitgum districts.
He said the assistance given to the more than 4,000 pupils to enroll in schools was a short-term measure.
“As UNICEF, we shall give all the necessary package to enable the reunification of the children with their families,” Mogwanja said.
Mogwanja was on Tuesday meeting district officials during a familiarisation tour of the Unicef-funded programmes in the district.
The programmes include the Guinea worm eradication and the Alternative Basic Education for Karamoja (ABEK).
Mwoganja expressed concern that the district population figures did not tally with the over-all performance in service delivery.
“Either the population is inflated or the district is not performing according to expectations,” he said.
Mogwanja who visited some of the schools noted that the enrolment was in sharp contrast with the daily attendance.
He said the district should work towards redesigning of the ABEK curriculum to benefit children in Karamoja and other pastoral communities in Uganda.
