Mbarara district is investigating allegations of corruption, sectarianism and incompetence in the education department.

In a district council meeting at Kamukuzi Council Hall last week, members demanded for resignation of the education secretary.

The members said the mocks results were poor yet the education sector was well-facilitated.

An estimated 60% of the pupils failed the examinations.

They cited incidences of poor facilitation, ghost teachers and bribery in the department.
The deputy resident district commissioner, Julius Magembe, said the allegations were serious and called for immediate investigations.

Education secretary Emmanuel Turyamureba conceded the standards had declined but called on the council to work as a team to arrest the situation. He said they should not trade accusations.
