FIDA-Uganda, a legal support network for women, has commended Cabinet on its recent approval of the Domestic Relations Bill, reports Tim Cocks.

FIDA officials said they were confident Parliament would pass the bill paving way for domestic equality between the sexes.

The bill makes provisions toughening laws and penalties on domestic violence.
It recognises there can be rape within marriage.

“When you get married, there was always a presumption that you must have sex. This bill gives people the right to refuse on certain grounds,” said Annette Ttendo, a FIDA advocacy officer.

She said this would help stem the spread of HIV in marriages.

“If a woman fears to have sex with her husband because he may have got HIV somewhere, she must have the right to protect herself from infection,” Ttendo said.
