Police chief warns parents

THE district Police commander, Peter Sirikye, has warned parents against early marriages. “Our people must desist from marrying off their girls for personal gain. Parents should avoid being compromised by culprits through bribes,” Sirikye said.

He was addressing a press conference on Wednesday. He urged school authorities to train girls in defensive skills to protect them against rape. Sirikye added: “Girls are normally defiled by people close to them such as neighbours, relatives and teachers.”

He also encouraged leaders to sensitise children about the dangers of early sex. He asked the education ministry to introduce sex education on the syllabus. Sirikye warned LCs against handling defilement cases.

IDPs get 400 beehives
Internally displaced people in the district have received 400 modern bee-hives from Soroti Environment Concern, a local non-governmental organisation. Moses Okalebo, the project coordinator, said the Langstroth beehives cost sh150,000 each.

The hives were given to six farmers’ groups that had been trained in bee keeping. Okalebo urged the farmers to jealously guard the hives, saying they were for eradication of poverty and improvement of livelihoods.

He said the beehives were bought using funds from the European Union under the Northern Uganda Rehabilitation Programme.
